Welcome to my blog page, where I will be sharing what is going on in my life, current art projects and general thoughts that occupy my mind. This section of my website will be a once a month posting, summing up main themes within my current art projects, but also giving you guys some insight into my life as an artist and human.
This month I have been thinking a lot about what inspires me, not just as a creative person but as a young individual, living my life to the fullest. And although this is just my own personal experience, I think that this may apply to more then just me. So what transports me into a happy and healthy state of mind?
Well… there are some days where you just don’t feel like doing anything or nothing you do turns out right. And to be honest, when I look back at my professional career as an artist there are times where I have had no idea what inspires me. As an example, I know of some artists who can produce anything, anytime, no matter how they feel… and I really admire that. As for me and the majority, it really depends on your mood. For this I think you have to learn to be conscious of what makes you feel good, because if you know that then there is literally nothing that can get in your way. And to get myself into the right state of mind there are a couple of things that help keep me focused, put the situation in perspective and inspire me.
One big boost to my inspiration is surrounding myself with people that are positive, loving, driven and fearless. I am lucky to have a big family that shares these qualities… so if it need to I can pick up the phone and call home to Canada. But for your friends or your partner, I really believe that you should choose people that raise and challenge you to do better. The friends that I have remained close to are people that inspire me with their dreams and their conviction in life. More then often some of the best works I have painted were inspired by people I love… what they like, what I admire in them and what might help them to move forward in life. I try to communicate that through my artwork.
Another element that effects my mood is my environment and the spaces that make up my world. For instance, right now I live in Munich, Germany, and although it is a far cry from island life, there are a few spaces that remind me of home. So whenever I get a chance I try and get a glimpse of the alps, take a walk through the woods, and enjoy the general splendor of all the districts that make up this city. Whatever your environment, wherever you live, it is important to know that these spaces effect how you feel.
One last thing that turns my inspiration up is music… and I am a lover of pretty much anything that has a rhythm. It doesn’t matter which language, which genre, who made it… I could live my life listening to music. I find it very comforting when I need a writing break at university, energizing when I am walking to the underground, and inspiring when I am painting up a storm in my apartment. To put it simply, it is an essential.
So if you are reading this, I hope that you guys take the time to find out what inspires you. Whether it is talking to your family, your friends, taking some time to enjoy your environment… or dancing around to some music. It can have the potential to make life brighter and inspire you to do great things.
